What is Ergonomics?

Jul-21-2008 By timm

Ergonomics is how you interact with your environment.

More formally, ergonomics is the study of human capabilities in relationship to work demands.  The term “ergonomics” is derived from two Greek words: “ergon” (work) and “nomoi” (natural laws).

The goal of ergonomics is to provide a workplace environment that “fits” the worker, in order to prevent repetitive strain injuries (RSI) that can develop over time and result in long-term disability.

Ergonomics in the workplace is focused on both the short and long-term safety of employees.  Ergonomics reduces costs by improving safety and productivity, while decreasing injuries and downtime.

The scientists who conduct ergonomics research are called “ergonomists.”  Their studies contribute to the design of products and systems that better match the needs, abilities and limitations of human workers.

To evaluate the “fit” between a person and his/her work environment, ergonomists consider the following factors:

  • Job types and demands on the worker
  • Equipment used (size, shape and fit for the job)
  • Information used (how it’s delivered, accessed and changed)

There are five aspects of ergonomics:

  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Ease of use
  • Productivity/performance
  • Aesthetics

And ergonomics can be divided into three key domains:

  • Physical
  • Cognitive
  • Organizational
